A Mathizen member who is a Grade 7 student of Abuyog Academy bags a Silver Medal at the 8th Annual International Mathematics Competition (IMC) held from August 3 to 6, 2012 in Singapore.

Hillary Diane Andales, a member of the Philippine Team, competed against 936 math wizards from 9 other countries including China, Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore.

To determine the math wizards' fates, an 18-item test was conducted at the Global Indian International School (GIIS), Singapore on August 4th.

On August 5th, an awarding ceremony was held at the Downtown East - D'Marquee, Singapore. The Philippine delegates bagged 16 gold medals, 32 silver, and 48 bronze placing second to China in the overall medal tally.

Kyle Patrich Dulay, a Grade 7 student of Philippine Science High School - Main, was the only 7th Grader to receive a gold medal from the Philippines. For the silver medals, only three Filipino 7th Graders were awarded. Namely, Hillary Diane Andales of Abuyog Academy, Nathan Joseph Oranga of St. Jude Catholic School, and Alfonso Miguel Abella of Grace Christian College.

Prior to the competition, Andales was selected from thousands of Filipino math whiz kids from places like Zamboanga, Manila, and Iloilo. After a series of intensive math trainings conducted by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild (MTG), she was chosen to compete in the IMC.

In preparation for the contest, Andales said she practiced self-review on math topics based on the high-standard Singapore Math Syllabus.
