Today is International Women's Day, and to celebrate, we will be posting a series of images and short biographies commemorating extraordinary women mathematicians that you should look up to and emulate. While there are only few women in history who made it to excel in Math, they deserve our highest regard for being able to excel in this field despite the odds. We start with Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to ever win the Fields Medal (2014) – known as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics" – in recognition for her contributions to the understanding of the symmetry of curved surfaces. She is an Iranian mathematician working in the United States as a professor of mathematics at Stanford University since 2008.
