China won 1st place in the recently concluded IMO 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa.  This is the 2nd year for China to win first place in two straight years in the most prestigious Math contest in the world.

USA came second after China, a big improvement from its 3rd rank last year.

Both China and USA won 5 Golds and 1 Silver each.

Taiwan ranks 3rd place, a big improvement from being 14th in 2012 and 8th in 2013.

Russia remained at 4th place for four (4) straight years after being no. 1 in 2007.

Japan ranks 5th this year, a big improvement from being 17th in 2012 and 11th in 2013.

Korea ranks 7th this year, a dismal performance from being 1st in 2012 and 2nd in 2013.

IMO 2014 Country Rank

This year’s IMO is participated in by 101 countries.  A total of 560 contestants competed in South Africa, of which 56 of them are women.

The total awards won this year are as follows:

Gold medals:     49   (score ≥ 29 points).
Silver medals:     113   (score ≥ 22 points).
Bronze medals:    133   (score ≥ 16 points).
Honourable mentions:    151.

Maximum possible points per contestant: 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 42.
